The 7 types of rest

Find the rest you're missing. Then plan one small fix for each.

Sleep is only one kind of rest. You can sleep eight hours and still feel flat, because the tank that's empty might be a different one.

This printable breaks rest into seven types: physical, mental, sensory, creative, emotional, social and spiritual. Each one has a short description and a simple way to get more of it. Physical rest can be passive, like sleep and naps, or active, like yoga, stretching and massage. Mental rest can be as simple as a short break every two hours. Sensory rest might be closing your eyes for a minute in the middle of the day.

Use it as a worksheet. Read through the seven types and tick the ones you're short on this week. Then write down one small thing you'll do for each. Start with the one or two that stand out. Keep it on the fridge or your desk.

I use the same idea with athletes. Recovery isn't only what happens to your body after training. It's everything that helps you feel ready for the next session, the next work day and the next week.

Rest worksheet

The 7 types of rest

Tick the ones you're short on. Write one thing you'll do this week.

1

Physical rest

Passive or active. Passive is sleep and naps. Active is yoga, stretching and massage that help you move freely.

2

Mental rest

You don't need a holiday. Take a short break every two hours at work. Keep a notepad by the bed for nagging thoughts.

3

Sensory rest

Bright lights, screens, noise and constant chatter add up. Close your eyes for a minute in the middle of the day. Unplug at the end of every day.

4

Creative rest

Key if your work means solving problems or coming up with ideas. Get outdoors, or enjoy music, art or a good film.

5

Emotional rest

Make the time and space to say how you really feel. Cut back on people pleasing. Be yourself.

6

Social rest

Notice which people lift you up and which ones drain you. Spend more time with the ones who lift you.

7

Spiritual rest

Feel part of something bigger than yourself. Try meditation, prayer or getting involved in your community.
